Keeping Your Pet Hydrated

By Deb Michalik

Keeping our fur kids properly hydrated is vital for their overall health, comfort and well-being:

  • Water supports organ function, temperature regulation, joint lubrication, digestive health, skin and coat condition, waste elimination.
  • Dogs need about one ounce of water per pound of body weight daily.
  • Cats typically require 3.5 – 4.5 ounces of water per 5 pounds of body weight on a daily basis.
  • Dry gums or sticky saliva, lethargy or weakness, loss of skin elasticity, dark yellow urine or no urination can all be signs of dehydration. If you suspect dehydration, offer water immediately. In severe cases, contact a vet as IV fluids may be necessary.
  • Hot weather can be a challenge for our furry friends so be sure to bring water during walks and travel, avoid midday heat, provide shade and cool resting areas.
  • NEVER LEAVE PETS IN A HOT CAR!

Pets can sometimes be fickle and not drink as much water as they should.

  • Keep your pet’s water bowl clean and provide fresh water regularly in multiple locations. Be sure to refill their water bowls regularly, especially during hot weather or after physical activity.
  • For those picky drinkers, consider adding wet food into their diet which has a higher moisture content than dry food. You can also consider mixing some water to their dry food.
  • Drop a few ice cubes into their water bowl. It’s fun to watch them try to catch the slippery little cubes.
  • Consider investing in a high-quality water fountain, designed especially for pets as many cats and dogs prefer running water. These fountains provide a continuous flow of fresh water in the hopes that your furry friend will drink more.
  • It is important to monitor their water intake. If you notice any changes in their water consumption, it could be the sign of an underlying health issue.

Remember a well hydrated fur kid is a happy fur kid.
