Why Dogs Bite

Dogs bite for a variety of reasons…instinct, communication, stress, pain, self-defense. Biting is often a last resort when a dog feels unsafe, overwhelmed or unable to escape. Typically, a bite is not out of nowhere, there is almost always a trigger or buildup.

To try to understand why dogs bite, let’s look at some of the common reasons:

·       Fear or Self-Defense. Usually the #1 reason. If a dog feels threatened, scared, or cornered, biting is their way of protecting themselves. Most common if they are exposed to unfamiliar people, loud noises, or sudden movements often paired with warning signs of growling or backing away. Strangers approaching too quickly, direct eye contact, being startled while sleeping may be perceived as a threat leading to a bite.

·       Pain or Illness. If your pup is normally a gentle dog, touching a sore spot or injury may trigger a reflex bite even when touched by familiar people. Arthritis, infections, ear infections, dental pain or internal problems can lower a gentle dog’s tolerance.

·       Protectiveness. Dogs may bite to protect food/treats, toys/bones, beds, their owner or their “territory”. This behavior is a natural survival instinct as they bite to prevent something “valuable” from being taken away.

·       Overstimulation or Excitement. While more common with puppies and high-energy pups, some dogs get so excited during playtime that they lose control and “play biting” may escalate if not managed.

·       Lack of socialization. Dogs that are not exposed to various people, animals, or environments early in life may react fearfully or aggressively in normal situations.

·       Miscommunication. Unlike humans, dogs can feel threatened with hugging, face-to-face contact, or grabbing. Kids often miss warning signs which can lead to bites.

·       Warning Signs. Most dogs will give signals before they bite. Be sure to watch for growling or snarling, stiff body posture, ears back, tail tucked, showing teeth or intense staring.
